Quality and Taste
To get the best yield and taste from a juicing orange it is very important to select fruit that has been grown specifically for juicing and will have a much higher juice content than average table fruit.
The Growers
The calendar year is roughly divided into the two main geographical growing areas
Northern Hemisphere – Dec to July - Cyprus, Egypt, Israel, Morocco, Spain & Turkey
Southern Hemisphere – August to Dec - Cuba, South America (Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Uraguay), South Africa
Types of Juicing oranges
Baladi – Early juicing fruit from Egypt
Midnight – South Africa - usually available late summer
Navelina – Early season fruit from Spain or Egypt. Generally available Dec through to spring
Salustiana - Early season fruit from Spain or Egypt. Generally available Dec through to Feb
Valencia Late – generally accepted to be the best juicing orange – usually available most of the year round
Valencia Delta seedless – Closely related in style to Valencia. Available from South Africa in late summe r
